UNESCO had proclaimed 1979 as the International Year of the Child to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1959 Declaration of the Rights of the Child.
Two years prior, in February 1977, PLO Tokyo Representative Office had been established, and it functioned as a central hub for Japan-Palestine solidarity, also throughout the 1980s.
A large symposium on the Palestinian Cause was held in Yokohama in November 1979, with ca. 600 attendees (researchers, intellectuals, cultural figures, activists, and politicians).
